Endowment policy surrender is common in the UK, but selling or "trading endowments" is becoming more widespread, and can mean more money for the endowment policy holder.

Here is what the Financial Services Authority has to say about a traded endowment policy :

 "If for whatever reason you're thinking of surrendering or cashing your policy in, make sure your endowment company tells you about ALL the options - that includes the option of trading the policy in as well as surrendering it, if it has been running for at least five years."

Research shows that many endowment policyholders cash in (or surrender) their policies early. In fact a report by the Association of Policy Market Makers reveals that only about 30% of all endowment policies actually reach maturity.

30% of endowment policies are cancelled in the first few years of their original lifespan, and the rest are either sold to an endowment buyer (second hand endowment policy trader) or surrendered at some point before maturing and paying out.

Surrender your policy back to the endowment issuing company and you may miss out on the extra cash that you can get by selling the endowment policy, instead, to an endowment policy trader ( they buy second hand endowments as investments to balance the risk profile of a portfolio of investments)

There are a number of actions you can take to compensate for an endowment policy shortfall

• You can alter your mortgage so that the projected endowment shortfall amount is converted to repayment (capital and interest)
• You can tell the lender that you wish to change all of your mortgage debt, from "interest only" (supported by the endowment) to a full repayment mortgage.
• Overpay the mortgage each month, or aim to repay part of the mortgage early.
• Extend the term of the endowment policy (lender and endowment insurance companies consent required) to give the endowment policy more time to grow, and have the benefit of additional contributions
• Take out a "top up" savings plan to run alongside the endowment policy
• Top up the existing endowment policy.
